  • A deepfake is synthetic media—usually video, audio, or an image—that has been created or altered using artificial intelligence to make it appear that a real person looks or sounds like they are saying or doing something that never actually happened. The term is the combination of two words with "deep" being a reference to deep learning with AI, and "fake" meaning synthetically generated content. 

    Examples Include:

    • Family emergency call: Your child’s voice begs for urgent bail money. She’s safe.

    • Fake video of a friend: Video shows your friend in a shocking situation. It’s AI.

    • Viral fake news: Image of a Politician saying something outrageous. The image is fake.

    • Work video call request: Boss asks for urgent wire transfer. The video is synthetic.

  • Not well.  Over the past 5 years, human detection ability has remained roughly flat while deepfake quality has drastically improved.  This means the gap is closing in favor of the deepfakes. Statistically, humans already guess incorrectly 50% of the time.  Essentially, it's down to the flip of a coin.

    The average person is not able to identify deepfakes accurately:

    • With only 50–65% accuracy when tasked with identifying random mixes of real and synthetic content.

    • 58–63% accuracy when shown deepfake videos 

    • For the highest-quality deepfakes, accuracy can drop to 25–30%, which is actually worse than a coin flip.

  • The interesting thing is that many of the classic "deepfake tells" from a few years ago are disappearing. In 2019–2021, you could often spot obvious artifacts. In 2026, the best deepfakes have eliminated many of those cues. 

     

    Here's what you can look for:

    • Unnatural eye behavior

    • Teeth and mouth anomalies

    • Lighting mismatches

    • Odd movements of the head

    • Missing speech imperfections

    If humans are able to determine at around 50–60% accuracy, and high-quality deepfakes can push that below chance, then technological help is needed.
